7 Ways to Prevent Loneliness Over the Holidays

Wednesday, December 10, 2025

The holiday season is often described as the “most wonderful time of the year,” yet for many older adults, this time can bring unexpected feelings of loneliness or disconnection. Family members may live far away, travel plans may not align, and winter weather can make getting out and about more difficult. But with the right support, resources, and meaningful connections, the holidays can still be filled with warmth, joy, and community.

At Parkwood Heights, we understand that emotional well-being is just as important as physical health, especially during the holiday season. Whether you’re a current resident, a senior considering a move, or an adult child supporting a parent, here are helpful ways to prevent loneliness and create a season full of connection and comfort.

1. Prioritize Meaningful, Regular Communication

Staying in touch doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple, scheduled communication can make a world of difference.

  • Set weekly phone or video call times with family and friends. Routine helps maintain connection.
  • Encourage loved ones to send holiday cards, photos, or letters, which make lasting keepsakes.
  • Grandchildren can connect through short video messages, drawings, or even holiday crafts.

For seniors considering a move, knowing that Parkwood Heights provides staff support, planned activities, and community spaces makes it easier to stay connected, especially when family is out of state.

2. Engage in Social Activities (Even Small Ones Count)

Loneliness often shrinks when community grows. Participating in social events helps create a sense of belonging.

At Parkwood Heights, residents enjoy:

  • Holiday parties and themed events
  • Music programs and performances
  • Craft workshops and movie nights
  • Bingo and numerous card and other games
  • Seasonal outings and shopping when the weather permits

These activities make it easy to meet neighbors, build friendships, and enjoy shared traditions. For adult children, this provides peace of mind knowing their loved one is surrounded by opportunities to connect daily.

Even small interactions matter: sharing a cup of cocoa with a neighbor, joining a friend for a walk, or attending weekly activities can significantly lift spirits.

3. Create Your Own Holiday Traditions

Traditions don’t have to be elaborate to feel special. Sometimes the best ones are simple and meaningful.

Seniors can try:

  • Hosting a small ornament exchange with neighbors
  • Watching a classic holiday movie in a community room
  • Setting up a mini tree or festive décor to brighten the apartment
  • Reading a favorite holiday book or poem
  • Sharing family recipes with friends or neighbors

Creating new traditions is especially important for seniors who may be transitioning to a retirement community. It helps build a sense of home and continuity while making new memories.

4. Give Back Through Kindness or Volunteering

Acts of giving can ease feelings of loneliness by creating a sense of purpose and connection.

Consider:

  • Donating mittens, hats, or small gifts to local charities
  • Writing holiday cards for service members or children in hospitals
  • Knitting items for a community project
  • Helping decorate shared spaces at Parkwood Heights
  • Baking treats for neighbors or staff

These simple acts bring fulfillment and help foster community, something especially valuable during the holidays.

5. Stay Physically Active and Emotionally Supported

Physical movement helps boost mood, reduce stress, and support emotional well-being.

Residents can use the fitness center, participate in gentle exercise classes, stretching routines, seated yoga, balance class, or other indoor activities to stay moving even in winter weather.

Pairing physical activity with supportive conversation. Whether with neighbors, family, or Parkwood Heights staff, can ease feelings of isolation.

Adult children can support their parents by encouraging them to attend community programs or checking in more often during the holiday season.

6. Consider the Benefits of a Supportive Community

For many seniors, the holidays highlight the importance of being surrounded by caring people and accessible activities. Retirement communities like Parkwood Heights offer:

  • A built-in social network
  • On-site events that make participating easy
  • Safety, comfort, and walkable indoor spaces
  • Staff who genuinely care about each resident
  • Peace of mind for adult children who may not live close by

If you or your loved one is considering a move, touring during the holiday season can be especially beneficial. You can experience the warmth of the community firsthand, see how residents connect, and explore what daily life might feel like.

Feeling lonely doesn’t mean someone wants to be alone; often, it simply means they need a little more support than before. Parkwood Heights is designed to make every resident feel included, valued, and part of a family.

7. Know That It’s Okay to Ask for Support

Loneliness can be overwhelming, but nobody should navigate it in silence. Reaching out—whether to a family member, a neighbor, staff, or wellness professionals—is a sign of strength.

Parkwood Heights provides a caring environment where residents feel safe expressing their needs. The holidays become brighter when support and companionship are only a few steps away.

Closing Thoughts

Preventing loneliness during the holidays begins with simple acts of connection, sharing a conversation, joining an activity, or enjoying seasonal traditions. Whether you’re already part of the Parkwood Heights family, exploring senior living options, or supporting a parent through this stage of life, you’re not alone.

The holidays are a time for warmth, kindness, and community, and at Parkwood Heights, that’s what we’re all about.

Here it is just a little over two weeks since we moved Bruce into Parkwood. I just wanted to tell you how pleased we are with Bruce’s transition and acclimation to Parkwood Heights. The entire staff and residents have been so very welcoming, helpful, and supportive.I see a remarkable difference in Bruce’s energy, health, and his avenues of interest….. We owe this to the eager and affirmative attention everyone at Parkwood has given Bruce over these past two weeks…Oh my gosh, I can’t tell you how relieved, rested, and encouraged I feel since Bruce has joined the Parkwood community…

Ken and I just want to let you know how much we appreciated having our Uncle in the Enriched Program at Parkwood Heights. His apartment was bright and inviting and the care he received by all the staff was wonderful. He could be independent, as well as cared for in relation to his needs. No matter what the day brought, the staff would tell us they loved their jobs and would always have a smile and a hug for everyone, helping to make each day a better day for those around them.

I moved to Parkwood Heights in 2005 because I wanted to live closer to my daughter. The activities department was the deciding factor. I enjoy having so many activities and events to choose from. Also, when calculating my expenses to live in my home or to live at Parkwood, the decision was made easier because the cost was about the same.

On January 19th we moved mom from Florida to New York. We were pleased with Parkwood Heights, from staff to the lovely facility. It was a difficult move for mom at the age of 97 as well as us with the arrangements. From day one, all of our questions were answered and we were guided through the move as easily as possible.

We had been looking around for about 2 years ... we knew that we wanted a spacious villa ... we came to Parkwood because we wanted to do things and they had just what we were looking for. There are so many activities to choose from, places to go and people to visit with. We love it here.
